Homework Week 6- Remembrance Day

5/6K Classroom Blog

As the First World War was formally declared over at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, we traditionally hold a minute of silence throughout the Commonwealth on 11th November every year.

Read the poem below and answer the questions (you may need to do a little research).

In Flanders Fields

The poem “In Flanders Fields” by Dr John McCrae, written in 1915, is the reason that we use poppies to remember those that have died in wars.

    4) We wear poppies on remembrance day because that was where the soldiers died on the battlefield. Legend has it that since there was so much blood spilt on the ground, that it fertilized the poppies on the field.

  3. 1. What/who are we remembering on Remembrance Day?

We are remembering the people who fought for us. After four years of horrible warfare, and 37 million casualties, military and civilian alike, the highest German officers called an armistice (suspension of fighting), in order to right an agreement to stop World War 1. We are remembering the 37 million casualty

    2. What does the poem make you think, feel and wonder?

The poem is very powerful. I say this because of the language he uses. It makes me wonder what it would have been like on Flanders Fields. And I feel sad that someone so young, so healthy and be killed so fast (paragraph 2). I think I would be terrified to fight on Flanders Fields, bombs going off all the time, bullets whizzing overhead.

    3. Identify at least two tier 2 words and find their meanings.

Scarce: Scarce means there is not enough of something; Chocolate was scarce at the shop
Amid: In the middle of two or more things; I was amid the two sports cars, posing for a picture

    4. Why Do we wear poppies on Remembrance Day?

We wear poppies to help us remember. All the money made by selling Remembrance Day merchandise goes to families that need support, after a close family member dies in a war, giving the families some money to buy things they need, but might not be able to afford it.

5.Write your own acrostic poem using the word REMEMBER, there may be a yummy prize for the best one from each grade.

  4. We are remembering the Australian soldiers that served for our country and made it a better place. At 11:00, 11th November every year, we have a minute of silence for this reason.

Well at the moment I can’t read the poem because it’s too blurry (don’t worry it’s my internet) but when I do get a chance to read it, I will answer the questions.

We wear poppies because they were growing after the dead bodies of soldiers were moved off the poppy fields. It’s a legend that the poppies are red because the blood of soldiers stained it to be that colour. So that is why we wear poppies for remembrance day, to show the blood from the Australian soldiers.

    Acrostic poem:

    Remembrance
    End
    Men
    Eat
    Mines
    Brave
    Eager
    Responsibility

  5. 1) we remember all the soliders that died in the war

    2) the poem made me feel/think that. The man that served our country was happy to died for our county and weren’t sad/annoyed that they died.

    4) The Poppy’s are remember because they were the first flowers to grow on the battlefield.
